On Saturday morning Nathan once again sat across the metal table from his father. He was sleep-deprived and feeling desperate. It had been less than 24 hours since his arrest, and the prospect of spending two more nights behind bars, much less the years a conviction could bring, had him panicked again.

“Nate, I know this is tough, but there’s nothing we can do right now,” Frank tried to reassure his son. “I’m sure as soon as the judge comes in on Monday morning you’ll be arraigned and can get out of here.”

“I know. I know. But Dad, what if I’m convicted and have to do real time? What then?”

“We’ll cross that bridge if we ever get there, which I hope we won’t. Right now, you’ve just got to keep it together. Your mother sends her love. There’s not much we can do, but I’ll stop by again tonight before dinner. Keep hanging in there.”

“Like I have a choice.”

Nathan returned to his cell, lay down on the metal cot, closed his eyes, and considered his prospects. From where he sat, the future could not have looked bleaker. First, there was the immediate concern about his criminal indictment and the potential for conviction and prison time. Then there was the very real possibility of financial ruin resulting from exorbitant legal fees and an exodus of clients from his firm. Personal and business bankruptcy were very real dangers. And then there was the uncertainty around his marriage and the very real likelihood that he and Catherine would split up permanently. It was a tragedy trifecta. And all because he made a decision – a decision that, in his mind, was both well-reasoned and well-informed – to take a shortcut toward home.
